Welcome to Summer Energy Series

Speaker 1

Hey , hey friend , welcome back to the Smash , the Crash . Last episode we talked about the schedule whiplash , that disorienting shift from school year routine to summer chaos , and if that hit home , this and today's episode is the natural next step . So we are in episode two of our summer energy series . And if you've ever looked at the clock , seen it still light out at 8.45 pm and thought I should go fold the laundry , or I should start this new project , or I should reorganize my emails , reorganize the pantry , I need to get out the mop and mop the hardwood floors , then yep , this one is for you , because longer days can feel like an open invitation to do more , be more , get more done . But I hate to break it . That is pressure and it's sneakily draining your energy and you may not even realize it . So let's talk about the trap of more daylight equals more time , equals more productivity . It sounds logical , right , but it's a lie . It's a sunny , sneaky little lie .

Speaker 1

We've been culturally programmed to treat summer like a performance review . Make the most of it , get outside , plan the vacation , keep the kids off the screens . And while you're at it , how about you ? Keep maintaining a clean house ? Stay on top of the work your day job ? How about you start a new meal plan ? How about you make sure dinner's on the table every night and smile through every step and every minute of the day ? Right , smile through every step and every minute of the day , right . But this is what I call the summer productivity hustle trap . You look around and you see other people on Instagram or in your neighborhood or on Facebook and they're taking the kids hiking or planning the perfect backyard barbecue or starting a garden , and meanwhile you are like cool , cool , I just ordered takeout and I'm yelling at the cat for scratching on the furniture . But the comparison , the comparison trap , is real and it's a summer favorite weapon . So let's pull back the curtain and reveal the truth . Even if you're not aware of it , this pressure builds and builds and you feel it deep inside your nervous system . So this kind of daylight guilt lands squarely . It puts you squarely in the yellow zone . You're not in danger , but you're overstimulated . You're revving the engine on fumes and you're on . You're on way past when your body wanted to start winding down .

Speaker 1

So let me paint this picture for you you push through your normal evening slump . You've gotten your second or your third wind by now because the sun is still up . So why rest ? You feel a little guilty grabbing the remote at 730 when quote unquote productive people are out gardening or running their 5k trainings in the golden hour

The Summer Productivity Hustle Trap

Speaker 1

. You get that weird second win , third win 9pm and think I'll just do one more thing . Or you lay in bed but your brain is still racing because the lights never really dimmed , and neither did your expectations . You say yes to another cookout , another pool invite or a weekend event , not because you want to , but because it's summer and we should be doing something . It's like your nervous system thinks it's noon all day long , even when it's clearly bedtime . Does any of this resonate ? So I want you to think what can we do instead to kind of break the light-driven , our sunlight-driven burnout cycle this summer ?

Speaker 1

Here are three energy smart shifts you can try this week . Start with just one One set a light wind down cue . So what is something that you can create to start your body to recognize that it's time to slow down ? So pick one thing . Maybe it's turning on a light music playlist , maybe it's making a cup of lavender chamomile tea , maybe it's a shower in a low-lit bathroom or just turning on a dim lamp . This will become your turn-off switch , a signal to your body that we're done for today , no matter what the sky says .

Speaker 1

Number two create an evening boundary time clock . So decide on your non-negotiable wind down window . Maybe for you it's 8 pm . Maybe 8 pm is the new quote . Close of business . Set it , protect it . You don't need to earn your rest , especially not when there's extra daylight , especially not when there's extra daylight . And number three ask the gut check question , the gut check guilt question . Would I still feel the need to do this if it were dark outside ? If the answer's no , let it go . The chore will still be there tomorrow . You don't owe the sunset your productivity .

Speaker 1

So let's reframe . Longer days do not require longer to-do lists . They require a longer permission to rest . So just because the sun is still shining , it doesn't mean you have to be . Your energy has nothing to prove . So this week I want you to start noticing when you catch yourself doing . Quote just one more thing out of that feeling of pressure and not the feeling of purpose .

Speaker 1

Now , I am not saying you cannot enjoy longer sunlight days , because if you're like me , I have been waiting for longer daylight for months . We've been in that winter cocoon of shortened days , and so this feels amazing . So what I'm saying

Three Energy Smart Shifts

Speaker 1

is , if you feel that you want to be out and about and enjoying the daylight longer , make sure it's aligned with what your values are , with what your desire is , if it makes you feel good and fills your soul . But don't do things just because you feel the pressure to have to , because there's more time or there's really . Not more time in the day is there , but more daylight in the day .

Speaker 1

So I have a challenge for you . I want you to pick one evening this week where you shut it all down by eight o'clock . And I don't mean that you need to be in bed at eight o'clock , but I just mean eight o'clock is your time , where this is your cue , where you're going to start your wind down window . No guilt , no exceptions , but this is your chance to re-enter your green zone . So take a walk , sit in silence , maybe sit outside and watch the sunset , lay on the floor , stare at the ceiling and just do nothing .

Speaker 1

But you don't need to earn it , you just need to allow it . So if that always-on summer energy is starting to wear you out , I've got something that can help you .
